Will Obama Get Tough??

Obama Opposes Privatization and DeRegulation
Click here to view the larger image. Trust me, you will really like it!!

Here’s a quick Obama in a loose style. Do you like the small, dark, calculating, evil-looking orbs for eyes?? For a 20-25minute drawing, it’s not bad but still crappy. I don’t really know how long it took me, but it was kind of quick but still pretty decent.

Instant Political Pundit Time:
Hopefully during the debates, Obama will attack the Straight-Talk Express. Throughout his career McCain said and will say anything to get his name and face in the papers. You don’t need to read Matt Welch’s Myth of a Maverick to find many flip-flopping McCain statements. Whether he’s for de-regulation or regulation, against privatization or vaguely telling the public that private savings accounts are part of the solution along with Bush’s plans, McCain’s Straight Talk Express often sounds conveniently modified.

In the wake of the recent economic woes, what do you think would have happen if Social Security* was privatized and handled by . . . Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, AIG or maybe Morgan Stanley which may be partially owned by Japan’s largest bank Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc.

*Last note, whether you like NBA basketball, follow the Dallas Mavericks, or READ THIS FAR, check out Maverick’s owner Mark Cuban’s blog. He has some really interested views and posts.
“Senators McCain and Obama, failure to  recognize that what the financial markets went through changed the fabric of our economic model and in turn the impact of your economic policy is completely irresponsible.” - Mark Cuban

MORNING NEWS ITEMS:

Television’s White Out

Family Guy\'s Cleveland Brown

Entertainment Weekly has an interesting article on the lack of diversity on the upcoming season of new television sitcoms and dramas. They even went as far as to chart diversity on TV by each major network. The article discusses American television history as early as 1999 when the NAACP made a public outcry concerning the lack of diversity and basic insider television industry diversity politics. Another contentious racial issue for people to ponder, here’s my quick 2-cent commentary.

It’s 2008, at this point audiences are savvy enough to realize when certain characters are thrown into a show to appease a particular group. Those characters usually are one-dimensional and stick out like a sore thumb. This is the strategy television executives have been employing for quite a while. Amazingly some people viewed Jennifer Hudson’s inclusion in the Sex and the City film as an accomplishment.

” . . . that’s usually how upstart networks become viable, they target an underserved audience-which is usually African-American, Latino, and [other] minorities-so they can get some numbers. Then once they become a little bit more financially viable, they move into mainstream programming. That’s what Fox did. That’s what UPN did. That’s what the WB did. So that audience tends to get handed off to the next upstart network. It’s like a relay race and we’re the baton.”

I thought this strategy was obvious, yet people complain when their shows get canceled in favor of more mainstream programs.

It’s 2008, I could really care less about the lack of diversity. Why? Because there’s always the DIY route. They point to Tyler Perry as an example but NAACP’s Executive Director of Hollywood Bureau adds that “everybody doesn’t have the financial wherewithal to be able to play the game at the level that Tyler Perry’s playing it.” Then everybody needs to learn a thing or two from Perry’s playbook. Outside of Tyler Perry there’s David E. Talbert, Robert Townsend, the Wayans (Keenan, Marlon & Shawn), Will Smith, and freaking Ice Cube.

Although television is a very powerful and accessible medium, I just don’t see how people are complaining and not taking advantage of the technology that exist to create their own programs. Is Bollywood waiting for the latest all-white American import to arrive? Has anyone taken notice of the burgeoning humorous African and Caribbean DVD’s hitting the streets?? I know there are many Puerto Rican and Dominican videos on the market.

‘The first thing the diversity rep should do is fire the guy who hired him!” he says. ”You see that white guy sitting next to you? Fire him and hire a black guy! You see that white lady down at the end of the hall? Fire her and hire a Latina lady! That’s how you do it.

Television networks employ high-level VP Diversity Reps who’s sole purpose is to remind their fellow co-workers to employee minorities in programs and behind the scenes. Two things, if I were white, I would be pissed. If a Diversity Rep intends to fire me, just because . . . I would file a lawsuit for discrimination. As a non-white, I would simply abandon ship and pave my own way. It’s 2008, and you have to remind people how to color American television, then something is wrong. Fortunately there are so many avenues for ambitious, forward-thinking people in the business. Solution: just go indie and create your own programs or read a book. Personally I can’t really listen to people complain about the images on television, when you can practically program what you watch at home with all the options available.

Family Guy\'s Cleveland Brown

I don’t watch Family Guy, so I probably won’t watch the Cleveland Brown’s spin off show. The fact that he’s voiced by a white actor really doesn’t help. It really doesn’t it. I don’t care for the character design either so I hooked up his lips and ears. On with the Simpsons.

Does the lack of color on television cause any alarm or are you too busy watching cable and downloading movies for free?

Understanding that folks make a living acting and writing for television, do you think it’s fair to simply fire and replace white writers and other television workers to increase balance in the television industry?

Is the complaining and “public outcry” getting tired, considering the alternatives and options?

Considering the job description, wouldn’t you want a meaningful, fulfilling job like a “Diversity Representative?”

StarChild Character

Here’s a version of a character design that I’m working on. Did you ever have an image or thought in your head that was difficult to transfer to paper? The image just did not come out the way you imagined it would. That just means I need more continue doodling. Check out another version after the jump. Let me know what you think.
cute starchild character

Here’s a quote from the world of politics for those that are interested. A former John Edwards supporter said this while introducing Senator Clinton.

Some people compare one of the other candidates to John F. Kennedy. But he was assassinated.

This political tidbit was picked up by the Huffington Post, MSNBC and some other political bloggers. I would expect a snide remark from a shock jock, comedian or snarky blogger but I guess when people are involved in presidential campaigns, they say some real funky a** ish.

Chris Bridges is Ludicrous

I did not draw this and I don’t usually post other people’s work but I think this looks good. I always love Matt’s unique style. Luda on the Simpsons season finale. The show is on its 18th season. I think they captured his likeness well. Yeah, I’m a Luda fan, he was a great fill-in while Redman was on his long hiatus. But both Luda and Red are emcees that actually have many flows that deliver. Peep Luda’s serious work ethic. (I got wind of this information via Nah Right Lite).

American Born Chinese

American Born Chinese

I picked up the book American Born Chinese because the artwork and style is clean and simple. As I read the book, I became more impressed with the writing. The story flows and entertains easily. This is one of my favorite books.

The story may be from the Chinese American experience but it is a universal story. People in America and abroad struggle with their ethnic identities and social acceptance. One of the main characters, Jin Wang, main issue is simply trying to fit in. He sacrifices his identity to be more socially acceptable in his new environment.

The story structure is pretty interesting. It basically connects three separate stories into one similar to the movie the Hours starring Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Julian Moore. Without being preachy, the ABC story successfully drives its point.

the Monkey King

The character design is wonderful. My favorite character is the Monkey King. I could have recreated the Monkey King in my own interpretation but I decided to simply make some minor alterations, like removing the red bandana and making the appearance more menacing.

R.I.P. Diego Corrales [29]

Diego CorralesHe had one of the most exciting boxing matches on May 7th, 2005 of the decade. Two years before his death. He was definitely a boxer who believed in entertaining the crowds. He was dropped twice by Castillo in their memorable match, only to come back and win with flurries of punches. Corrales died from a motorcycle accident. Yes, he’s a small notch on Mayweather’s record, at 130lbs, he was 5’10″. Hopefully HBO, ESPN, etc. will dedicate at least an half-hour special in his memory.

I’ll probably post a Corrales drawing later on.

Want to Fight?

Sports Crap: NBA referee Joe Crawford was suspended indefinitely.
The NBA rules has gotten crazy and with it, some of the refs. Tim Duncan, not Rasheed Wallace, got a technical foul while sitting on the bench! For what?? Laughing! Well, apparently the ref asked big Timmy if he wanted to fight. After investigations, the NBA finally decided to protect the players and suspend Joey for the rest of the season.

In the NBA, you will get a technical if you show any emotional reaction to a referee’s call. Here’s some excerpts from the NBA official technical foul Rasheed guidelines.

A technical foul(s) may be assessed to any player on the court or anyone seated on the bench for conduct which, in the opinion of an official, is detrimental to the game.

d. A technical foul shall be assessed for unsportsmanlike tactics such as:
(1) Disrespectfully addressing an official
(3) Overt actions indicating resentment to a call

e. Cursing or blaspheming an official shall not be considered the only cause for imposing
technical fouls. Running tirades, continuous criticism or griping may be sufficient cause
to assess a technical. Excessive misconduct shall result in ejection from the game.

Peep the video after the jump and another pretty old drawing.

Failure has no Father

My computer is not acting right . . . so, here are some words.

Tony Blair Politicians usually speak, act and behave frankly during the last months of their terms. Hours before leaving office President Bill Clinton issued 140 pardons. Clinton pardoned people for offenses like importing cocaine, money laundering, financial fraud, issuing worthless checks, intent to distribute illegal drugs, and many more crazy crap. Clinton was a hugely popular president, that’s another issue. Tony Blair is on his way out of office and he is speaking his mind. 7 kids under 16 murdered under a 2 month period is serious.

Blair blames recent string of murders on black culture.

“When are we going to start saying this is a problem amongst a section of the black community and not, for reasons of political correctness, pretend that this is nothing to do with it?”

“We need to stop thinking of this as a society that has gone wrong – it has not – but of specific groups that for specific reasons have gone outside of the proper lines of respect and good conduct towards others and need by specific measures to be brought back into the fold.”

Mr. Blair is known to believe the tendency for many black boys to be raised in families without a father leads to a lack of appropriate role models.

The Commission for Racial Equality broadly backed Mr Blair, saying people “shouldn’t be afraid to talk about this issue for fear of sounding prejudiced”.

If a U.S. politician (or radio broadcaster) made the same comments, what would happen? Will people protest and ask for immediate resignation? How much of a media frenzy would those statements cause? And more importantly, what social changes would actually occur to stop said murders?
