Graphic Inspiration

Often, I like to create random images for fun, just to keep the creative juices flowing. The end result is really not important because it is all about the process, the mental notes you take and the inspiration that follows. This piece was influenced by the colorful bold blacklight posters and some of the graphic Blue Note album cover art. Blacklight posters probably don’t hang on many walls these days, but the influence of Blue Note design and photography is still evident. Has anyone recently seen an obvious Blue Note album cover rip?

Graphic Experiments

The Beatnuts Intoxicated Demons cover ripped Hank Mobley’s The Turnaround, but they also outright stole the logo.

Does the face look familiar?

Graduation Remix

Kanye Bear punched in the face

This would probably be a bad idea, although I can imagine some one attempting to put together a ‘Ye mix project. The project would be good just remove the Drunk and Hot Girls track, that’s not really close to funny and the Barry Bonds track featuring a lackluster throw-a-way Wayne verse. The CD has been thoroughly dissected by Brandon Soderberg during his Kanye West Week review. Props.

I was thinking about added more blood and maybe throwing Ye-Bear in some samurai outfit anime style. The artwork is not close to complete, but what would you do to make it hot? If someone came up with a crazy idea, I just might post it.

Will I ever complete an illustration

Keep it Hip Hop

Just some light experimentation. Does it work? I don’t know.

Wu-Tang vs Shaolin

Does anyone care about the Wu-Tang vs. Shaolin CD?

Rza, The Fall of the Abbot, Wu Tang

How would Raekwon approach the production for this CD since he feels RZA is falling short of that punch-you-in-the-face music. Does he have a direction in mind? Getting a producer to submit “hot” tracks does not make classic material. Working with a producer with a vision, and direction usually produces wonders. Think of Michael Jackson working Quincy Jones and Bruce Sweden, Stevie Wonder’s In the Key of Life, the Bomb Squad with Public Enemy and Ice Cube, Common’s Be with Kanye, Kanye’s solo work, Prince Paul with De La Soul, LL Cool J with Marley Marl, the Good Doctor’s fully produced projects, and a number of cohesive CD’s that displayed production with direction. Can Raekwon work tirelessly and put together something like that?

Artwork? The last couple of Wu’s CD covers have been lackluster. 8th Diagram cover was straight garbage. Method Man, GZA, and RZA are the only prominent members that have notably been concerned with visuals. Recording artists needs now-a-days need more. Unsprung Artist has an interesting idea, something that would work for Wu vs Shaolin. Note, Kanye’s visuals work well for him. Method Man is working with Sanford Greene on a Wu-Tang graphic novel. Rae should take cue and think in terms of incorporating visually arresting marketing materials to push Wu vs. Shaolin. If he currently does not have a visual direction, he should work with a self-styled expert like me. I rushed this banner and it is still HOT.

Performance? Will they actual approach their performance in a professional manner? Like say, on par with great performing rap acts like the Roots, Busta Rhymes and Public Enemy? Showing up late and bitching about microphones simply does not cut it. Then again most new and old rap acts fail to perform with a sense of fun, energy, excitement and professionalism.

I would buy this CD if it was produced correctly. And hopefully Raekwon would make it his business to make sure the CD was creatively marketed. I just don’t think Raekwon will be able to deliver. Here are some interesting bits from a 2007 Hip Hop DX interview with the Master Chef along with my commentary.

We gotta strike back with something right away to let them know we wasn’t in agreement with that.” (Note, make the project come out in the Summer ’08.)

Through my whole career, I did nothing but make cinematic albums. Check The Lex Diamond Story, I been doing cinematics. I don’t think nobody could f**k with me on that level anyway, when it come to that type of album.

DX: Do you feel like you’ve been misunderstood in your post- Cuban Linx career?
R: “No, I think people just ain’t on my level . . . I’m a big giant in this, I’m doing this for the real n****s.” (Real n****s?!!?)

After the jump there are a bunch of comments from Hip Hop DX readers. Just like me, they’re a bunch of Wu-Fanatics, some with good points and some just fanatical but very entertaining on boring work day. Emphasis mine and edited for effect..

Defining Classic Hip Hop Art

10 years from now, how will you define hip hop art?
Classic Hip Hop Art

Art is not something that you limit to simple rules and definitions but if you wanted to give some one a frame of reference to begin, where would you start? The visual style of hip hop is based on street art. It has so many influences from the works of Bode, comic books, popular cartoons, to Arabic calligraphy. But what are the aesthetics of classic hip hop art? Here’s what I came up with, after 2 minutes of painstaking research and review of the pioneering books Subway Art and Spraycan Art (Street Graphics / Street Art).

    Strong Character Design.
You don’t even have to create your own, think of it as sampling. Many early characters painted on walls were reused because they effective. Styles were reused as much as they are in popular manga titles.
    Powerful and Vibrant Colors.
I’ve seen some great monochromatic pieces but I don’t think you can deny the power of color.

Ok, maybe some one has a better argument for what visually defines classic hip hop art. I’m obviously the self-styled expert. Any thoughts?

But if you are interested in a more comprehensive essay on the Definition, check out the new book published by PowerHouse Books. The book is not released yet but I’m sure it will be worth your while. PowerHouse also publishes a number a great art/photography books like the Breaks. Correction: The book will be published by Collins Design a division of Harpers Collins.

Friday Fighting Fun!

MMA Fighters
UFC 80 headline fight should be a technical thriller. Although I hope their fight end with a KO/TKO/Submission from strikes as opposed to a Unanimous or Split Decision. B.J. Penn is definitely the favorite over Joe Stevenson. The rest of the card is suspect but there are possibilities for really entertaining match ups. Gonzaga via Crop-Cop crushing kicks! Sam Stout via devastating chopping KO.
UPDATE:
Here’s some quotes from Don King.

”They have a mediocre fight in London that will be shown on a delayed basis,” he said. ”I have no problem with that.”

”I love the UFC,” King said. ”Dana White and the Fertitta brothers [Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta and White own the UFC] have done a marvelous job, but their decline lately has been precipitous.

”If they don’t find a new way to stimulate interest, boxing will be all alone on top again.”

With the exception of UFC 79, Don is not lying. But Jones vs Trinidad, would have been interesting if it occurred when they were on top of their respective divisions.

Roy Jones vs Felix Trinidad

Past their prime, Roy Jones Jr. vs Felix Trinidad, may be exciting. Felix is moving up in weight for this fight, so it will be interesting to see how he fares against Roy’s speed. Tito must make his opponent respect his power early and often. Roy just needs to be Roy. Maybe Roy will be able to display a flash of brilliance that made him a star in the 90′s. Yeah, his fights were carefully picked and he avoided the Hopkins rematch but the fights were still entertaining. Tito? I always liked Trinidad but he’s a straight-up fighter that has no business in the ring with boxers. Right? Wright. Oscar would have gotten the decision against him if he did not run around for the last 4 rounds because he was definitely beating Trinidad to the punch, just not the power-shots. Either way, I know Puerto Rico is going to be represented hard in the Garden.
