Pacquiao!

drawing of Manny Pacquiao
I had fun with the rich, dark tone in the hair.

Manny Pacquiao became a boxing superstar after his wars against Morales, Barrera and Márquez. He pretty much cemented his legacy amongst the greatest this past Saturday after pummeling Miguel Angel Cotto for 12 rounds. I really don’t think too much about his two previous fights because Oscar De La Hoya was dehydrated and his reflexes left him years ago. Hatton? Hatton simply has little to no skill. He’s a brawler. Miguel Angel Cotto was a very credible opponent but he could not match Pacquiao in speed, power and more importantly skill. Pacquiao is just too good.

Boxing versus MMA
I don’t know about the undercard, but Pacquiao vs. Cotto was a great event. The Super Six Middleweight Tournament is really great for boxing, although I know very few fans will tune in. After that what’s really going in boxing that will entertain and capture a new audience? After Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Jr., if it happens, what major fight card will take place? American fans are stating loud and clear how they feel about a polite, dominant, educated but foreign heavyweight champion in Klitschko. David Hayes? He’s not any where close to becoming a star and he doesn’t want to face any of the Klitschko brothers.

Mixed Martial Arts? There are so many upcoming exciting events that will capture the imagination of the casual sports fans. MMA is working on developing new talent and creating public awareness through shows like the Ultimate Fighter. Hopefully boxing can generate more noise but I just don’t see it happening any time soon.

UFC 105
Quick Notes:

  • Michael Bisping was a huge surprise. I really think that was his best performance in the Octagon against a dangerous athletic opponent.
  • Mike Brown was great. I’m a fan.
  • Ross Pearson was just too much, he will be a contender.
  • Dan Hardy can stand and deliver.
  • Brandon Vera lost. Period. No controversy. Randy Couture had an excellent game plan.
